Purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and correlates of antenatal depressionamongpregnantwomeninAnuradhapura,SriLanka,andtoexplorethefactorstructureofEPDS. Methods: Pregnant women with gestational age of 24–36weeks and residing in Anuradhapura district, Sri Lanka were recruited to the study using a two stage cluster sampling procedure. Sinhalese version of Edinburgh Post Partum DepressionScale(EPDS)andanintervieweradministeredquestionnairewasusetocollectdata.Acutoffvalueof9was usedfortheSinhaleseversionofEPDS. Results: A total of 376 pregnant women were studied. Median EPDS score among pregnant women was 5 (IQR 2–8). Prevalenceofantenataldepressioninthisstudysamplewas16.2%(n=61).Thoughtofselfharming(itemnumber10)was reportedby26pregnantwomen(6.9%).Noneofthesocio-demographicfactorswereassociatedwithdepressioninthis studysample.Havingheartburnwassignificantlyassociatedwithdepressivesymptoms(p=0.041).SriLankanversionof EPDSshowedatwofactorsolution.Anxietywasnotemergedasaseparatefactorinthisanalysis. Conclusions:PrevalenceofantenataldepressioninAnuradhapura,SriLankawasrelativelylow.Anxietywasnotemergedas aseparatefactorintheSinhaleseversionoftheEPDS.
