Yamada ZebinJiang1,2.,YicunChen2.,FenYao2,WeizhouChen4,ShupingZhong5,FuchunZheng1*, GanggangShi2,3 * 1Department of Pharmacy, First Affiliated Hospital, Shantou University Medical College, Shantou, China, 2Department of Pharmacology, Shantou University Medical College,Shantou,China,3DepartmentofCardiovascularDiseases,FirstAffiliatedHospital,ShantouUniversityMedicalCollege,Shantou,China,4MarineBiologyInstitute, Shantou University, Shantou, China, 5Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California,UnitedStatesofAmerica Abstract Thepresentstudywasdesignatedtoevaluatetheantioxidant,antibacterialandantischistosomalactivitiesofGrateloupia livida(GL)extractsinvitro.AGLEthanolextract(EE)wasseparatedintopetroleumether(PE),ethylacetate(EA),n-butyl alcohol(BuOH)andaqueous(AQ)fractionstofractionatethepolarandnon-polarcompoundsintheEE.Extractsantioxidant activities were evaluated in vitro by DPPH radical-scavenging, deoxyribose radical scavenging, and b-carotene bleaching assays, all using butylatedhydroxytoluene (BHT) as the reference antioxidant compound. The most effective antioxidant propertieswereobservedinthePEfractioninallthreeassays.AntimicrobialtestingshowedthatthePEfractionexhibited broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, with the PE fraction also exhibiting strong activity against the human pathogenic trematode S. japonicum adult worm. In order to investigate the relationships between bioactivity and chemical composition,thechemicalcompositionofthePEfractionwasanalyzedbygaschromatography-massspectrometry(GC- MS).Intotal,25componentswereidentifiedinthePEfraction,mostofwhichhaveknownantioxidantandantimicrobial activities. However, none of the compounds have reported activity against Schistosoma, suggesting that the schistosomicidal activity of the PE fraction may be related to minor constit
