Methods:Apopulation-basedelectroniccohortstudyusingroutinelycollectedlinkedhealthcaredata.Electronicmedical recordsprovidedmaternaldiabetesstatusandoffspringweightatbirthandages1and5years(n=147,773motherchild pairs).Logisticregressionmodelswereusedtoobtainoddsratiostodescribetheassociationbetweenmaternaldiabetes statusandoffspringsize,adjustedformaternalpre-pregnancyweight,ageandsmokingstatus. Findings:Weidentified1,250(0.9%)pregnancieswithexistingdiabetes(27.8%withtype1diabetes),1,358withgestational diabetes (0.9%) and 635(0.4%) who developeddiabetes post-pregnancy. Children whosemothers hadexisting diabetes were less likely to be large at 12 months (OR: 0.7 (95%CI: 0.6, 0.8)) than those without diabetes. Maternal diabetes was associatedwithhighweightatage5yearsinchildrenwhosemothershadahighpre-pregnancyweighttertile(gestational diabetes,(OR:2.1(95%CI:1.25–3.6)),existingdiabetes(OR:1.3(95%CI:1.0to1.6)). Conclusion: The prevention of childhood obesity should focus on mothers with diabetes with a high maternal pre- pregnancyweight.Wefoundlittleevidencethatdiabetesinpregnancyleadstolongtermobesity‘programming’.
