Abstract
Background:Guidelinesrecommendfrequentscreeningofmenwhohavesexwithmen(MSM)forsexuallytransmissible
infections(STIs)butfewinterventionshavedemonstratedincreasedtestinganddetectionofbacterialSTIsamongMSMin
controlledstudies.
Methods:Weusedautomatedtextmessageandemailremindersgeneratedbycomputerassistedself-interview(CASI)to
remindMSMtoretestforsyphilis.Wecomparedclinicvisits,STItestinganddetectionratesover12monthbetweenmen
receivingreminders(remindergroup)andmennotofferedthereminders(concurrentcontrolgroup).
Results:Menwhochose3-monthlyremindershadmoreclinicvisits(median3vs1)andhighertestingratesforpharyngeal
gonorrhoea(67.0%vs33.6%),rectalgonorrhoea(62.7%vs31.1%),urethralchlamydia(67.3%vs39.3%),rectalchlamydia
(62.9% vs 31.3%), syphilis (67.0% vs 39.3%) and HIV (64.9% vs 36.7%) (all p,0.001) than concurrent controls, within 12
monthsaftertheirfirstvisit.Also,menreceivingremindershadahighercombinedtestingrateforalltheaforementioned
STIsatasamevisit(55.7%vs25.5%,p,0.001)comparedwithconcurrentcontrols.Thisassociationremainedafteradjusting
fordifferencesincharacteristicsbetweenthetwogroups(adjustedoddsratio:1.77,95%confidenceinterval:1.51-2.08).Men
