Continuity Rules: Breakdown Editing Usually, scene begins with an Establishing Shot, taken from distance (Long Shot, LS), which establishes where things and characters are. Then, cuts to closer shots. Then, starts again with a Reestablishing Shot and a new 180 line (unless film cuts to new location). This practice of using establishing shots, then cutting to closer shots, is sometimes called breakdown editing.
