The Great Translator and Scholar— Lin Yutang Background of Lin Yutang Lin Yutang(October 10, 1895 – March 26, 1976) , original name is Hele, pen name is Yutang. He was born in Longxi City in Fujian Province. （林语堂（1895年10月10日-1976年3月26日），原名和乐，后改语堂，福建龙溪人。) His father was a Christian minister. He obtained his bachelors degree from St. Johns University in Shanghai , a masters degree in comparative literature from Harvard University , and a doctorate in linguistics from LeipzigUniversity in Germany(德国莱比锡大学). He has been celebrated as a Chinese author of books in English and known for his work as a linguist, philosopher, writer, and inventor.
