This paper studies the availability equivalence ofdi?erent designs ofarepairable series-parallel system. Undertheassumption thatthesystemcomponents haveconstant failureratesandrepair rates, we derive the availability of the original and improved systems according to reduction, increase, hot duplication, warm duplication and cold duplication methods, respectively. The availability equivalence factor is introduced to compare di?erent system designs. Twotypes of availability equivalence factors ofthe system areobtained. Numerical examples areprovided to interprethowtoutilizetheobtained results. 1.Introduction Thestudyofrepairablesystemsisanimportanttopicinreliability.Systemavailabilityisa verymeaningfulmeasure,andachievingahighorrequiredlevelofavailabilityisanessential requisite.Insomeengineeringsystems,theavailabilitydependsonthesystemstructureas wellasonthecomponentavailability.Tomaintaintheavailabilityofsophisticatedsystems toahigherlevel,thesystem’sstructuraldesignorsystemcomponentsofhigheravailability shouldberequired,orbothofthemareperformedsimu
