Background.EastHarlemisanepicenteroftheintertwiningepidemicsofobesityanddiabetesinNewYork.Physicalactivityis thoughttopreventandcontrolanumberofchronicillnesses,includingdiabetes,bothindependentlyandthroughweightcontrol. Usingdatafromasurveycollectedonadult(age18+)residentsofEastHarlem,thisstudyevaluatedwhetherperceptionsof safetyandcommunity-identi?edbarrierswereassociatedwithlowerlevelsofphysicalactivityinadiversesample.Methods .We surveyed300adultsina2-censustractareaofEastHarlemandtookmeasurementsofheightandweight.Physicalactivitywas measuredintwoways:respondentswereclassi?edashavingmettheweeklyrecommendedtargetof2.5hoursofmoderatephysical activity(walking)perweek(ornot)andreportinghavingengagedinatleastonerecreationalphysicalactivity(ornot).Perceived barriers wereassessedthrough?veitemsdevelopedbyacommunityadvisory boardandperceptionsofneighborhoodsafety weremeasuredthroughanadapted7-itemscale.Twomultivariatelogisticregressionmodelswithperceivedbarriersandconcerns aboutneighborhoodsafetyweremodeledseparatelyaspredictorsofengaginginrecommendedlevelsofexerciseandrecreational physicalactivity,controllingforrespondentweightandsociodemographic
