ThisstudyexaminesutilisationoftheDutchhealthcaresystembyChinesepeopleintheNetherlandsaswellastheirattitudes tothesystem,payingspecialattentiontomentalhealth.Informationwasgatheredbysemistructuredinterviews(n =102).The mainissuesinvestigatedareaccess,help-seekingbehaviour,andqualityofcare.ResultsshowedthatmostrespondentsusedDutch healthcareastheirprimarymethodofmanaginghealthproblems.InadequateknowledgeaboutthesystemandlackofDutch languagepro?ciencyimpedeaccesstocare,inparticularregistrationwithaGeneralPractitioner(GP).Userscomplainedthat the care given di?ered from what they expected. Results also showed that the major problems are to be found in the group comingfromtheChinese-speakingregion.WesternconceptsofmentalhealthappeartobewidelyacceptedbyChineseinthe Netherlands.However,almosthalfofourrespondentsbelievedthattraditionalChinesemedicineorothermethodscanalsohelp withmentalhealthproblems.TheprovisionofrelevantinformationinChineseappearstobeimportantforimprovingaccess.
