Objective.Systemicsclerosis(SSc)isacomplexautoimmunediseaseinwhichinterferons(IFNs)mayplayanessentialrole.We hypothesizedthattypeIandIIIIFNsmaybefoundinincreasedlevelsinpatientsandberesponsibleforSScautoimmunestatus. Methods.TypeIandIIIIFNandISGbasalexpressionpro?lesweremeasuredbyqPCRusingRNAfromPBMCsofpatientsand controls.Results.TypeIIFNsareincreasedinSScpatients,whilenoinductionoftypeIIIIFNswasdetected.Thisinductioncannot berelatedtoIRF7,sincenoupregulationofthisgenewasseenonpatients.OftheISGstested,25OASlevelswereincreasedin patients,while6–16andMxAlevelswerenot.Conclusions.WhilethereisnoindicationoftypeIIIIFNinduction,increasedlevels oftypeIIFNsmayleadtoabnormalregulationofISGsthatcanberesponsibleforimmunesystemalterationsdescribedforSSc. 1.Introduction IFNs are immunomodulatory cytokine
