CONTRACTIVEPROJECTIONSINORLICZ SEQUENCESPACES BEATARANDRIANANTOANINA Received23June2003 Wecharacterizenorm-onecomplementedsubspacesofOrliczsequencespacesMequip- pedwitheitherLuxemburgorOrlicznorm,providedthattheOrliczfunctionMissu?- cientlysmoothandsu?cientlydi?erentfromthesquarefunction.Wemeasuresmooth- nessofMusingAC1andAC2classesintroducedbyMaleevandTroyanskiin1991,and thecondition forM tobedi?erentfromasquarefunction isessentially arequirement thatthesecondderivativeM ofMcannothavea?nitenonzerolimitatzero.Thispaper treatstherealcase;thecomplexcasefollowsfrompreviouslyknownresults. 1.Introduction Thestudyofnorm-oneprojectionsandtheirranges(one-complemented subspaces)has beenanimportant topicoftheisometricBanachspacetheorysincetheinceptionofthe ?eld.Contractiveprojectionswerealsoinvestigatedfromtheapproximationtheorypoint ofview,aspart ofthestudyofminimal projections, thatis,projections ontothegiven subspace with the smallest possible norm (cf. [5, 14]). They arealso closely related to themetricprojectionsornearestpointmappings,andtheyareanaturalextensionofthe notionoforthogonalprojectionsfromHilbertspacestogeneralBanachspaces.Despitea greatamountofworkoncontractiveprojections(cf.thesurvey[19]),notmuchisknown abouttheminOrliczspaces. InLebesgue spacesLp andp,1≤p∞,asubspace Y isone-complemented ifand onlyifYisisometricallyisomorphictoanL -spaceofappropriatedimension(see[1,6]). p Thisresulthasnoanalogueinotherspaces.Lindberg[10]demonstrated thatthereexist classesofOrliczsequencespacesMcontainingone-complemented subspaceswhichare notevenisomorphic toM.Heshowedthatforall1a≤b∞,thereexistsare?exive Orliczsequencespace sothatforall p∈[a,b],thereisacontractiveprojectionfrom M M onto asubspace isomorphic to .This implies, inparticular, that Orlicz sequence p spacescanhavecontinuumisomorphictypesofone-complemented subspaces.
