The lipidome of the marine hyperthermophilic archaeon Pyrococcus furiosus was studied by means of combined thin-layer chromatographyandMALDI-TOF/MSanalysesofthetotallipidextract.80–90%ofthemajorpolarlipidswererepresentedby archaeollipids(diethers)andtheremainingpartbycaldarchaeollipids(tetraethers).Thedirectanalysisoflipidsonchroma- tographyplateshowedthepresenceofthediphytanylglycerolanaloguesofphosphatidylinositolandphosphatidylglycerol,the N-acetylglucosamine-diphytanylglycerolphosphateplussomecaldarchaeollipidsdi?erentfromthosepreviouslydescribed.In addition,evidenceforthepresenceofthedimericetherlipidcardiolipinisreported,suggestingthatcardiolipinsareubiquitousin archaea. 1.Introduction P.furiosushasanunusualandintr
