A defaultmodel of distributedtemperature compensation satisfies these basic facts yetis not easilyreconciled with other propertiesofcircadianclocks,suchasmanymutantswithalteredbuttemperaturecompensatedperiods.Thedefaultmodel alsosuggeststhattheshapeofthecircadianlimitcycleandtheassociatedphaseresponsecurves(PRC)willvarysincethe averageconcentrationsofclockproteinschangewithtemperature.Weproposeanalternativeclassofmodelswherethe twinpropertiesofafixedperiodandentrainmentarestructuralandarisefromanunderlyingadaptivesystemthatbuffers temperaturechanges.ThesemodelsaredistinguishedbyaPRCwhoseshapeistemperatureindependentandorbitswhose extremaaretemperatureindependent.Theyarereadilyevolvedbylocal,hillclimbing,optimizationofgenenetworksfora commonqualitymeasureofbiologicalclocks,phaseanticipation.InterestinglyastandardrealizationoftheGoodwinmodel fortemperaturecompensationdisplayspropertiesofadaptiveratherthandistributedtemperaturecompensation.
