Thereis,however,littlestrongempiricalevidenceforthenegativeinteractionofnon-nativefishpopulationswithnativefish populations; such evidence would indicate a potential behavioural mechanism that could cause the population of the nativefishtodecline.Inthisstudy,weshowthatinfightsstagedbetweenpairsofNiletilapiaandpearlcichlidsofdiffering bodysize,theNiletilapiaweremoreaggressivethanthepearlcichlid.Becausethiseffectprevailedoverbody-sizeeffects, thepearlcichlidswereatadisadvantage.ThenicheoverlapbetweentheNiletilapiaandthepearlcichlidinnature,andthe competitiveadvantageshownbytheNiletilapiainthisstudypotentiallyrepresentoneofseveralpossibleresultsofthe negativeinteractionsimposedbyaninvasivespecies.Thesenegativeeffectsmayreducepopulationviabilityofthenative speciesandcausecompetitiveexclusion.
