Alcohol-RelatedContextModulatesPerformanceof SocialDrinkersinaVisualGo/No-GoTask:APreliminary AssessmentofEvent-RelatedPotentials Ge′raldinePetit,CharlesKornreich,XavierNoe¨l,PaulVerbanck,SalvatoreCampanella* LaboratoryofPsychologicalMedicine,FreeUniversityofBrussels,Brussels,Belgium Abstract Background:Increasedalcoholcue-reactivityandalteredinhibitoryprocessinghavebeenreportedinheavysocialdrinkers andalcohol-dependentpatients,andareassociatedwithrelapse.Insocialdrinkers,thesetwoprocesseshavebeenusually studiedseparatelybyrecordingevent-relatedpotentials(ERPs)duringrapidpicturepresentation.Theaimofourstudywas toconfrontsocialdrinkerstoatasktriggeringhighalcoholcue-reactivity,toverifywhetheritspecificallyalteredinhibitory performance,byusinglong-lastingbackgroundpicturepresentation. Methods: ERP were recorded during visual Go/No-Go tasks performed by social drinkers, in which a frequent Go signal (letter‘‘M’’),andarareNo-Gosignal(letter‘‘W’’)weresuperimposedonthreedifferenttypesofbackgroundpictures:neutral (blackbackground),alcohol-relatedandnonalcohol-related. Results:Ourdatasuggestedthatheavysocialdrinkersmademorecommissionerrorsthanlightdrinkers,butonlyinthe alcohol-relatedcontext.Neurophysiologically,thiswasreflectedbyadelayedNo-GoP3component. Conclusions:Elevatedalcoholcue-reactivitymayleadtopoorerinhibitoryperformanceinheavysocialdrinkers,andmaybe consideredasanimportantvulnerabilityfactorindevelopingalcoholmisuse.Preventionprogramsshouldbedesignedto decreasethehigharousalofalcoholstimuliandstrengthencognitivecontrolinyoung,at-riskindividuals.
