Geleijnse1* 1Division of Human Nutrition, Wageningen University, Wageningen, The Netherlands, 2National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, Bilthoven, The Netherlands Abstract Background:Whetherintakeofalpha-linolenicacid(ALA),theplant-derivedn-3polyunsaturatedfattyacid(PUFA),could prevent cardiovascular diseases is not yet clear. We examined the associations of ALA intake with 10-year incidence of coronaryheartdisease(CHD)andstrokeintheNetherlands. Methods:Datawerecollectedfromageneralpopulationof20,069generallyhealthymenandwomen,aged20to65years. Habitualdietwasassessedatbaseline(1993–1997)withavalidated178-itemfoodfrequencyquestionnaire.Incidencesof CHDandstrokewereassessedthroughlinkagewithmortalityandmorbidityregisters.Hazardratios(HR)werecalculated withmultivariableCoxproportionalhazardsmodels,adjustedforage,gender,lifestyle,anddietaryfactors. Results:During8–13yearsoffollow-up,weobserved280incidentCHDevents(19%fatal)and221strokes(4%fatal).Intakes ofenergy-adjustedALAinquintilesrangedfromlessthan1.0g/dinthebottomquintile(Q1)tomorethan1.9g/dinthe topquintile(Q5).ALAintakewasnotassociatedwithincidentCHD,withHRsvaryingbetween0.89and1.01(allp.0.05)in Q2–Q5comparedwiththebottomquintileofALAintake.Forincidentstroke,however,participantsinQ2–Q5hada35–50% lowerriskcomparedwiththereferencegroup.HRswere0.65(0.43–0.97),0.49(0.31–0.76),0.53(0.34–0.83),and0.65(0.41– 1.04)forQ2–Q5respectively. Conclusion:InthisgeneralDutchpopulation,ALAintakewasnotassociatedwithincidentCHD.Thedatasuggestedthata lowintakeofALAmaybearisk factorforincidentstroke. Theseresultswarrantconfirmationinotherpopulation-based studiesandintrials.
