ArticlesbyLatinAmericanAuthorsinPrestigious JournalsHaveFewerCitations RogerioMeneghini1,2*,AbelL.Packer1,2,LilianNassi-Calo`1 1BIREME-PAHO–WHO,Latin-AmericanandCaribbeanCenteronHealthSciencesInformation,Sa?oPaulo,Brazil,2DIS-DepartamentodeInforma′ticaMe′dica,Universidade FederaldeSa?o Paulo,Sa?o Paulo,Brazil Abstract Background:ThejournalImpactfactor(IF)isgenerallyacceptedtobeagoodmeasurementoftherelevance/qualityofarticles thatajournalpublishes.Inspiteofan,apparently,homogenouspeer-reviewprocessforagivenjournal,wehypothesizethat thecountryaffiliationofauthorsfromdevelopingLatinAmerican(LA)countriesaffectstheIFofajournaldetrimentally. Methodology/Principal Findings: Seven prestigious international journals, one multidisciplinary journal and six serving specificbranchesofscience,wereexaminedintermsoftheirIFintheWebofScience.Twosubsetsofeachjournalwere thenselectedtoevaluatetheinfluenceofauthor’saffiliationontheIF.Theycomprisedcontributions (i)withauthorship fromfourLatinAmerican(LA)countries(Argentina,Brazil,ChileandMexico)and(ii)withauthorshipfromfivedeveloped countries(England,France,Germany,JapanandUSA).Bothsubsetswerefurthersubdividedintotwogroups:articleswith authorship from one country only and collaborative articles with authorship from other countries. Articles from the five developedcountrieshadIFclosetotheoverallIFofthejournalsandtheinfluenceofcollaborationonthisvaluewasminor. InthecaseofLAarticlestheeffectofcollaboration(virtuallyallwithdevelopedcountries)wassignificant.TheIFsfornon- collaborativearticlesaveraged66%oftheoverallIFofthejournalswhereasthearticlesincollaborationraisedtheIFsto valuesclosetotheoverallIF. Conclusion/Significance:ThestudyshowsasignificantlylowerIFinthegroupofthesubsetsofnon-collaborativeLAarticlesand thusthatcountryaffiliationofauthorsfromnon-developedLAcountriesdoesaffecttheIFofajournaldetrimentally.Thereareno datatoindicatewhetherthelowerIFsofLAarticleswereduetotheirinherentinferiorquality/relevanceorpsycho-socialtre
