ABSTRACT
Background
Human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) is a b-herpesvirus with 90% seroprevalence that infects and
establisheslatencyinthecentralnervoussystem.TwoHHV-6variantsareknown:HHV-6Aand
HHV-6B.ActiveinfectionorreactivationofHHV-6inthebrainisassociatedwithneurological
disorders, including epilepsy, encephalitis, and multiple sclerosis. In a preliminary study, we
foundHHV-6BDNAinresectedbraintissuefrompatientswithmesialtemporallobeepilepsy
(MTLE)andhavelocalizedviralantigentoglialfibrillaryacidicprotein(GFAP)–positivegliain
thesamebrainsections.Wesought,first,todeterminetheextentofHHV-6infectioninbrain
materialresectedfromMTLEandnon-MTLEpatients;andsecond,toestablishinvitroprimary
astrocyteculturesfromfreshlyresectedbrainmaterialanddetermineexpressio
