Auditory-MotorMappingTrainingasanInterventionto FacilitateSpeechOutputinNon-VerbalChildrenwith Autism:AProofofConceptStudy CatherineY.Wan1*,LoesBazen1,RebeccaBaars1,AmandaLibenson1,LaurynZipse2,JenniferZuk1, AndreaNorton1,GottfriedSchlaug1 1MusicandNeuroimagingLaboratory,DepartmentofNeurology,BethIsraelDeaconessMedicalCenter,HarvardMedicalSchool,Boston,Massachusetts,UnitedStatesof America,2DepartmentofCommunicationSciencesandDisorders,MGHInstituteofHealthProfessions,Boston,Massachusetts,UnitedStatesofAmerica Abstract Although up to 25% of children with autism are non-verbal, there are very few interventions that can reliably produce significantimprovementsinspeechoutput.Recently,anovelinterventioncalledAuditory-MotorMappingTraining(AMMT) hasbeendeveloped,whichaimstopromotespeechproductiondirectlybytrainingtheassociationbetweensoundsand articulatoryactionsusingintonationandbimanualmotoractivities.AMMTcapitalizesontheinherentmusicalstrengthsof childrenwithautism,andoffersactivitiesthattheyintrinsicallyenjoy.Italsoengagesandpotentiallystimulatesanetworkof brainregionsthatmaybedysfunctionalinautism.Here,wereportaninitialefficacystudytoprovide‘proofofconcept’for AMMT. Six non-verbal children with autism participated. Prior to treatment, the children had no intelligible words. They eachreceived40individualsessionsofAMMT5timesperweek,overan8-weekperiod.Probeassessmentswereconducted periodicallyduringbaseline,therapy,andfollow-upsessions.Aftertherapy,allchildrenshowedsignificantimprovementsin theirabilitytoarticulatewordsandphrases,withgeneralizationtoitemsthatwerenotpracticedduringtherapysessions. Because these children had no or minimal vocal output prior to treatment, the acquisition of speech sounds and word approximationsthroughAMMTrepresentsacriticalstepinexpressivelanguagedevelopmentinchildrenwithautism.
