We conducted a survey in 2006 for 6971 households and a follow up survey in 2007 among eligibleremaininghouseholdsorreplacementhouseholds.Theinitialsurveycollectedinformationforallchildrenunderfive yearsoldwhodiedinthepreviousyear;thefollowupsurveyonchilddeathsintheprecedingfiveyears.Wecompared mortalityratesbasedon1-yearrecalltothe4yearsprecedingthemostrecent1year.Theinitialsurveyidentified58deaths amongchildren,5yearsintheprecedingyear.Thefollowupsurveyidentifiedamean53deathsperyearinthepreceding fiveyears(SD67.3).Under-fivemortalityratewas34andneonatalmortalitywas15perthousandlivebirthsduring2006– 2007.Theleadingcauseofunder-fivedeathwasrespiratoryinfections(22%).Themortalityratesamongchildrenunder4 yearsoldforthetwotimeperiods(mostrecent1-yearrecallandthe4yearsprecedingthemostrecent1year)weresimilar (36versus32).ThechildmortalityinurbanDhakawassubstantiallylowerthanthenationalrate.Mortality
