Methods: A longitudinal observational study in Northeastern Tanzania. Pregnant women were followed throughout pregnancywithserialtrans-abdominalultrasound.Allpregnancieswithpathologywereexcludedandachartrepresenting theoptimalgrowthpotentialwasdevelopedusingfetalweightsandbirthweights.Theweightchartwascomparedtoa chartfromCongo,achartrepresentingawhitepopulation,andachartrepresentingawhitepopulationbutadaptedtothe studypopulation.TheprevalenceofSGAwasassessedusingallfourcharts. Results:Atotalof2193weightmeasurementsfrom583fetuses/newbornswereincludedinthefetalweightchart.Ourchart hadlowerpercentilesthanalltheothercharts.Mostimportantly,intheendofpregnancy,the10th percentilesdeviated substantiallycausinganoverestimationofthetrueprevalenceofSGAnewbornsifourcharthadnotbeenused.
