DoNativeParasiticPlantsCauseMoreDamagetoExotic InvasiveHostsThanNativeNon-InvasiveHosts?An ImplicationforBiocontrol JunminLi*,ZexinJin,WenjingSong InstituteofEcology,TaizhouUniversity,Linhai,Zhejiang,China Abstract Fieldstudieshaveshownthatnative,parasiticplantsgrowvigorouslyoninvasiveplantsandcancausemoredamageto invasiveplantsthannativeplants.However,noempiricaltesthasbeenconductedandthemechanismisstillunknown.We conductedacompletelyrandomizedgreenhouseexperimentusing3congenericpairsofexotic,invasiveandnative,non- invasiveherbaceousplantspeciestoquantifythedamagecausedbyparasiticplantstohostsanditscorrelationwiththe hosts’growthrateandresourceuseefficiency.Thebiomassoftheparasiticplantsonexotic,invasivehostswassignificantly higher than on congeneric native, non-invasive hosts. Parasites caused more damage to exotic, invasive hosts than to congeneric,native,non-invasivehosts.Thedamagecausedbyparasitestohostswassignificantlypositivelycorrelatedwith thebiomassofparasiticplants.Thedamageofparasitestohostswassignificantly positivelycorrelated withtherelative growthrateandtheresourceuseefficiencyofitshostplants.Itmaybethemechanismbywhichparasiticplantsgrowmore vigorously on invasive hosts and cause more damage to exotic, invasive hosts than to native, non-invasive hosts. These resultssuggestapotentialbiologicalcontroleffectofnative,parasiticplantsoninvasivespeciesbyreducingthedominance ofinvasivespeciesintheinvadedcommunity.
