Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Thisstudyanalyzesthehydrodynamicmechanismproposedbyearlierstudies,focusing onthetime neededtoreachasteady-state solution.Inaddition,theauthorsinvestigateasiteintheeasternNiledelta, where the ancient Pelusiac branch of the Nile once flowed into a coastal lagoon then known as the Lake of Tanis. We conductasatelliteandmodelingsurveytoanalyzethislocation,usinggeologicalevidenceoftheancientbathymetryanda historicaldescriptionofastrongwindeventin1882.Asuiteofmodelexperimentsareperformedtodemonstrateanew hydrodynamicmechanismthatcancauseanangularbodyofwatertodivideunderwindstress,andtotestthebehaviorof ourstudylocationandreconstructedtopography. Conclusions/Significance: Under a uniform 28m/s easterly wind forcing in the reconstructed model basin, the ocean modelproducesanareaofexposedmudflatswheretherivermouthopensintothelake.Thislandbridgeis3–4kmlong and5kmwide,anditremainsopenfor4hours.Modelresultsindicatethatnavigationinshallow-waterharborscanbe significantlycurtailedbywindsetdownwhenstrongwindsblowoffshore.
