Methods:TheDiabeticRetinopathyInVariousEthnicgroupsinUK(DRIVEUK)Studyisacross-sectionalstudyontheethnic variations of the prevalence of DR and visual impairment in two multi-racial cohorts in the UK. People on the diabetes registerin WestYorkshireandSouthEastLondonwhowerescreened, treatedormonitoredbetween April2008toJuly 2009(London)orAugust2009(WestYorkshire)wereincludedinthestudy.Dataonage,gender,ethnicgroup,visualacuity and diabetic retinopathy were collected. Ethnic group was defined according to the 2011 census classification. The two mainethnicminoritygroupsrepresentedhereareBlacks(‘‘Black/African/Caribbean/BlackBritish’’)andSouthAsians(‘‘Asians originatingfromtheIndiansubcontinent’’).Weexaminedtheprevalenceofvisualimpairmentinthebettereyeusingthree cut-offpoints(a)lossofvisionsufficientfordriving(approximately,6/9)(b)visualimpairment(,6/12)and(c)severevisual impairment(,6/60),standardisingtheprevalenceofvisualimpairmentintheminorityethnicgroupstotheage-structureof thewhitepopulation.
