Mouse ultrasonic vocalizationsarerobustlyproducedinsocialcontexts.Inadults,malevocalizationduringcourtshiphasbecomeamodelof interest for signal-receiver interactions. These vocalizations can be grouped into syllable types that are consistently producedbydifferentsubspeciesandstrainsofmice.Vocalizationsareuniquetoindividuals,varyacrossdevelopment,and dependonsocialhousingconditions.Thebehavioralsignificanceofdifferentsyllabletypes,includingthecontextsinwhich differentvocalizationsaremadeandtheresponseslistenershavetodifferenttypesofvocalizations,isnotwellunderstood. Weexaminedtheeffectoffemalepresenceandestrousstateonmalevocalizationsbyexploringtheuseofsyllabletypes andtheparametersofsyllablesduringcourtship.Wealsoexploredcorrelationsbetweenvocalizationsandotherbehaviors. Theseexperimentalmanipulationsproducedfourmainfindings:1)vocalizationsvariedamongmales,2)theproductionof USVsandanincreaseintheuseofaspecificsyllabletypeweretemporallyrelatedtomountingbehavior,3)thefrequency (kHz),bandwidth,anddurationofsyllablesproducedbymaleswereinfluencedbytheestrousphaseoffemalepartners,and 4)syllabletypeschangedwhenfemaleswereremoved.Thesefindingsshowthatmouseultrasoniccourtshipvocalizations aresensitivetochangesinfemalephaseandpresence,furtherdemonstratingthecontext-sensitivityofthesecalls.
