MethodsandResults:Weevaluatedwhathappenedtogeneralmedicaljournalsthatwerepublishingpapershalfacentury ago,in1959.DatawereretrievedfromISIWebofScienceforcitationsandPubMed(Journalsfunction)forjournalhistory.Of 27eligiblejournalspublishingin1959,4havestoppedcirculation(includingtwoofthemostprestigiousjournalsin1959) andanother7changednamebetween1959and2009.Only6ofthese27journalshavebeenpublishedcontinuouslywith theirinitialnamesincetheystartedcirculation.Thecitationimpactofpaperspublishedin1959givesaverydifferentpicture fromthecurrentjournalimpactfactor;thecorrelationbetweenthetwoisnon-significantandveryclosetozero.Only13of the5,223paperspublishedin1959receivedatleast5citationsin2009. Conclusions:Journalsaremorepermanententitiesthansinglepapers,buttheyarealsosubjecttomajorchangeandtheir relativeprominencecanchangemarkedlyovertime.
