Methods: A prospective study was conducted using ten common clinical tests among patients and students in a large teachinghospitalinEastAfricatodeterminethepresenceofaPalmarislongus. Results:Theoverallrateofabsencewas4.4%withunilateralabsenceat3.3%andbilateralabsenceat1.1%.Theoverall difference between males and females was not statistically significant (p=0.605). Participants were more likely to have absenceintheirnondominanthand. Discussion:Ourfindingsthoughincontrasttomanystudiesworldwide,itconcurswithmoststudiesdoneintheAfrican setting.Thesedifferencesmaybeduetothehigherlevelsofmanuallabourandthemoreuseoftherighthandinthese activities.ThefrequencyoftheabsenceofPalmarislongusinEastAfricahasbeendetermined.Surgeonsshouldacquaint themselveswithprevalenceintheirareasofpractice.
