Abstract: Objective: Low back pain is associated with
lumbardiscdegeneration,whichismainlyduetogenetic
predisposition.Theobjectiveofthisstudywastoperform
a systematic review to evaluate genetic association
studies in lumbar disc degeneration as defined on
magneticresonanceimaging(MRI)inhumans.
Disc degeneration is characterized as morphological and
biochemical changes of the disc. Magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI) is the current gold standard to assess the integrity of the
intervertebral disc [14]. Degenerative changes on imaging are
generallybasedondecreasedsignalintensity(representinglossof
