Genes, however, make up only a part of the complex genomes of important bacterial pathogens. Here, we use an unbiased analysis to comprehensively identify genomic regions,includinggenes,domains,andintergenicelements,requiredfortheoptimalgrowthofMycobacteriumtuberculosis, amajorglobalhealthpathogen.Wefoundthatseveralproteinsjointlycontainbothdomainsrequiredforoptimalgrowth anddomainsthataredispensable.Inaddition,manynon-codingregions,includingregulatoryelementsandnon-coding RNAs,arecriticalformycobacterialgrowth.Ouranalysisshowsthatthegeneticrequirementsforgrowtharemorecomplex thancanbeappreciatedusinggene-centricanalysis.
