This coding was used to gain an understanding on the health care utilization and the mortality rate for individuals diagnosedwithFAS,aswellastoestimatetheassociatedhealthcarecostsinCanadaforthemostrecentavailablefiscal year(2008–2009). Methods:HealthcareutilizationdataassociatedwithadiagnosisofFASweredirectlyobtainedfromtheCanadianInstitute forHealthInformation(CIHI).MortalitydataassociatedwithadiagnosisofFASwereobtainedfromStatisticsCanada. Results:Thetotaldirecthealthcarecostofacutecare,psychiatriccare,daysurgery,andemergencydepartmentservices associatedwithFASinCanadain2008–2009,basedontheofficialCIHIdata,wasabout$6.7million.Thevastmajorityofthe mostresponsiblediagnoses,whichaccountforthemajorityofapatient’slengthofstayinhospital,fallwithintheICD-10 categoryMentalandBehaviouralDisorders(F00–F99).Itwasevidentthattheburdenandcostofacutecarehospitalizations duetoFASisincreasing21.6timesgreaterin2008–2009,comparedto2002–2003.ThemortalitydataduetoFAS,obtained fromStatisticsCanada(2000–2008),maybeunderreported,andarelikelyinvalid.
