Therefore,theexogenouscontroloffolliculardevelopmentwithhormonesaimstopredicttheoptimaltimeto mate.Oestradiol-17b(E2)anditsestersarecurrentlyusedindomesticspecies,includingcamelids,in synchronizationtreatments.But,inllamas,thereisnoreportsregardingtheappropriatedosagestobeusedand mostprotocolshavebeendesignedbyextrapolationfromthoserecommendedforotherruminants.Theaimof thepresentstudywastocharacterizeplasmaE2concentrationsinintactfemalellamasfollowingasingle intramuscular(i.m.)injectionoftwooestradiolesters:oestradiolbenzoate(EB)andoestradiolcypionate(ECP). Methods:Twelvenonpregnantandnonlactatingsexuallymaturellamaswerei.m.injectedonday0with2.5mg ofEB(EBgroup,n=6)orECP(ECPgroup,n=6).Bloodsampleswerecollectedimmediatelybeforeinjection,at1, 6,12,24haftertreatmentandthendailyuntilday14postinjection.Changesinhormoneconcentrationswith timewereanalyzedineachgroupbyanalysisofvariance(ANOVA)usingarepeatedmeasures(within-SS)design. PlasmaE2concentrationsandareaundertheconcentration-timecurve(AUC)valueswerecomparedbetween groupsbyANOVA.InallcasesaLeast-SignificantDifferencetest(LSD)wasusedtodeterminedifferencesbetween means.HormonalandAUCdataareexpressedasmean±S.E.M. Results:PeakplasmaE2concentrationswereachievedearlierandwerehigherinEBgroupthaninECPgroup. Thereafter,E2returnedtophysiologicalconcentrationsearlierinEBgroup(day5)thaninECPgroup(day9). AlthoughplasmaE2profilesdifferedovertimeamonggroupstherewerenodifferencesbetweenthemonAUC values. Conclusions:Thei.m.injectionofasingledoseofbothoestradiolestersresultedinplasmaE
