Abnormal values of liver enzymes and presence of replicativeHCV-RNAinperipheralbloodmononuclearcellsarealsoobserved.AimofthestudywastoevaluateoccultHCV occurrenceinapopulationunselectedforhepaticdisease. Methodology/Principal Findings: We chose from previous epidemiological studies three series of subjects (n=276, age range40–65years)unselectedforhepaticdisease.ThesesubjectsweretestedforthepresenceofHCVantibodiesandHCV- RNAinplasmaandintheperipheral bloodmononuclearcells (PBMCs)byusingcommercialsystems.Allsubjectstested negativeforHCVantibodiesandplasmaHCV-RNAandshowednormallevelsofliverenzymes;9/276patients(3.3%)were positiveforHCV-RNAinPBMCs,identifyingasubsetofsubjectswithpotentialoccultHCVinfection.Wecoulddeterminethe HCVtypefor8ofthe9patientsfindingtype1a(3patients),type1b(2patients),andtype2a(3patients). Conclusions:TheresultsofthisstudyshowevidencethatoccultHCVinfectionmayoccurinapopulationunselectedfor hepaticdisease.ApotentialriskofHCVinfectionspreadbysubjectsharbouringoccultHCVinfectionshouldbeconsidered.
