Methods:Thestudyinvolved671childrenaged12-59monthslivingintheAgincourtsub-district,ruralSouth Africain2007.AnthropometricmeasurementsweretakenandHIVtestingwithdisclosurewasdoneusingtwo rapidtests.Z-scoresweregeneratedusingWHO2006standardsasindicatorsofnutritionalstatus.Linearand logisticregressionanalyseswereconductedtoestablishthedeterminantsofchildnutritonalstatus. Results:Prevalenceofmalnutrition,particularlystunting(18%),washighintheoverallsampleofchildren.HIV prevalenceinthisagegroupwas4.4%(95%CI:2.79to5.97).HIVpositivechildrenhadsignificantlypoorer nutritionaloutcomesthantheirHIVnegativecounterparts.BesidesHIVstatus,othersignificantdeterminantsof nutritionaloutcomesincludedageofthechild,birthweight,maternalage,ageofhouseholdhead,andareaof residence. Conclusions:Thisstudydocumentspoornutritionalstatusamongchildrenaged12-59monthsinruralSouth Africa.HIVisanindependentmodifiableriskfactorforpoornutritionaloutcomesandmakesasignificant contributiontonutritionaloutcomesattheindividuallevel.EarlypaediatricHIVtestingofexposedoratrisk children,followedbyappropriatehealthcareforinfectedchildren,mayimprovetheirnutritionalstatusand survival.
