Opinions Open-AccessScience:ANecessityforGlobal PublicHealth Josefina Coloma, Eva Harris* T heworldofscienti?cresearchandscholarly publishingisundergoingaprofoundtransformation inlargepartduetotherapiddevelopmentof informationandcommunicationtechnologies.TheInternet andtheadventoffasternetworkingcapabilitiesnowallow virtuallyunlimitedaccesstoinformation,remotedata gathering,real-timeintegrationofdataintodatabasesand models,andonlinepurchasingofresearchsupplies.Atthe sametime,ithasopenednewpossibilitiesforresearchersto communicatewithcolleaguesandwiththesocietyingeneral. However,althoughsomeinvestigatorsinthedeveloping worldarekeepingpacewiththisnewreality,themajorityare largelyexcludedfromthistransformationbecauseoftheir limitedaccesstoscienti?cinformation.Particularlyrelevant totheareaofpathogenresearch,thevastmajorityof infectiousdiseasesinhumans,animals,andplantsoccursin thedevelopingworld,andef?cientcommunicationbetween localscientistsindevelopingcountriesandtheglobal communitywillfacilitateadvancesinknowledgeandcontrol ofthesepathogens.Herewediscussopenaccessandsocially responsiblephilosophiesinrelationtoscienti?ctraining, publishing,andintellectualproperty,andgiveexamplesof howwecanhelpkeepthedevelopingworldfullyinformed aboutthesenewmodels. The?rststepistrainingpartnersindevelopingcountries inlaboratorytechniquesandepidemiologicalskillsthat complementtheirexistingprograms,aswellasdeveloping theirpro?ciencyingrantproposalwriting.Anumberof organizationshaveundertakenworkshopsonsuchtopics aroundtheworld,includingtheWorldHealthOrganization (/en/),thePanAmericanHealth Organization(),theFogartyInternational CenteroftheNationalInstitutesofHealth(http:// www.?),andtheSustainableSciencesInstitute([SSI]; ),whichwerepresent.SSIisaSan Francisco–basedorganizationthathelpsscientistsin underprivilegedenvironmentsgainaccesstotheresources, technologies,skills,andknowledgetheyneedtoconduct cutting-edgeresearchwithanimpactonpublichealthandto effectivelycommunicatetheirresults
