Toinvestigatehowthesamplingperiods andthequantizationbitlengthsaffecttheestimationperformance, anequationtocompute theestimationperformanceisprovided. Analgorithmisproposedto?ndsamplingperiods and quantization bit lengths combination, which gives good estimation performance while satisfying the transmission rate constraint. Introduction Recently,networkedmonitoringsystemsarebecomingincreasinglypopular,wheresensordataare transmittedtoamonitoringstationthroughwiredorwirelessnetworks[1,2]. Inamonitoringstation, estimationalgorithms(suchasaKalman?lter)areusedtoestimatethesystemstates.Anetworkbetween sensornodesandamonitoringstationcaninducemanyproblemssuchastimedelays,packetdropouts, andlimitedbandwidth,wheretheydependonnetworktypesandschedulingmethods.
