DadaGlobalizationandHealth2011,7:24 /content/7/1/24 COMMENTARY OpenAccess Packagedwater:optimizinglocalprocessesfor sustainablewaterdeliveryindevelopingnations AyokunleCDada Abstract WithsomuchglobalattentionandcommitmenttowardsmakingtheWaterandSanitationtargetsofthe MillenniumDevelopmentGoals(MDGs)areality,availablefiguresseemtospeakonthecontraryastheyreveala largedisparitybetweentheexpectedandwhatcurrentlyobtainsespeciallyindevelopingcountries.Asstudies haveshownthatthestandardindustrializedworldmodelfordeliveryofsafedrinkingwatertechnologymaynot beaffordableinmuchofthedevelopingworld,packagedwaterissuggestedasalowcost,readilyavailable alternativewaterprovisionthatcouldhelpbridgethegap.Despitetheestablishedrolesthatthisdrinkingwater sourceplaysindevelopingnations,itsimportanceishoweversignificantlyunderestimated,andthesource consideredunimprovedgoingby‘internationalstandards’.Ratherthansimplydisqualifyingwaterfromthissource, focusshouldbeonidentifyingmeansofimprovement.Theneedforinterveningglobalcommunitiesand developmentalorganizationstolearnfromandbuildonthelocalprocessesthatalreadyoperateinthedeveloping worldisalsoemphasized.Identifyingpackagedwatercasestudiesofsomedevelopingnations,theimplicationofa tenaciousfocusonimportedpolicies,standardsandregulatoryapproachesondrinkingwateraccessforresidents ofthedevelopingworldisalsodiscussed.
