SunitaVohra1,7*,SoleilSurette2,DeepikaMittra3,LawrenceDRosen4,PaulaGardiner5andKathiJKemper6 Abstract Background:Integrativemedicineisdefinedasrelationship-centeredcarethatfocusesonthewholeperson,is informedbyevidence,andmakesuseofallappropriatetherapeuticapproaches,healthcareprofessionalsand disciplinestoachieveoptimalhealthandhealing,includingevidence-basedcomplementaryandalternative medicine.Pediatricintegrativemedicine(PIM)developsandpromotesthisapproachwithinthefieldofpediatrics. WeconductedasurveytoidentifyanddescribePIMprogramswithinacademicchildren’shospitalsacrossNorth America.KeybarriersandopportunitieswereidentifiedforthegrowthanddevelopmentofacademicPIMinitiatives intheUSandCanada. Methods:AcademicPIMprogramswereidentifiedbyemailandeligibleforinclusioniftheyhadeachof educational,clinical,andresearchactivities.Programdirectorswereinterviewedbytelephoneregardingtheir clinical,research,educational,andoperationalaspects. Results:Sixteenprogramswereincluded.Most(75%)programsprovidedbothinpatientandoutpatientservices. Sevenprogramsoperatedwithlessthan1FTEclinicalpersonnel.Credentialingofcomplementaryandalternative medicine(CAM)providersvariedsubstantiallyacrosstheprogramsandbetweeninpatientandoutpatientservices. Almostall(94%)programsofferededucationalopportunitiesforresidentsinpediatricsand/orfamilymedicine.One fifth(20%)oftheeducationalprogramsweremandatoryformedicalstudents.Researchwasconductedinarange oftopics,buthalfoftheprogramsreportedlackofresearchfundingand/ortime.Thirty-onepercentofthe programsreliedonfee-for-serviceincome.
