PredictiveFeedbackCanAccountforBiphasicResponses intheLateralGeniculateNucleus JannekeF.M.Jehee1,2*,DanaH.Ballard1,3 1CenterforVisualScienceandDepartmentofComputerScience,UniversityofRochester,Rochester,NewYork,UnitedStatesofAmerica,2DepartmentofPsychology, VanderbiltUniversity,Nashville,Tennessee,UnitedStatesofAmerica,3DepartmentofComputerScience,UniversityofTexasatAustin,Austin,Texas,UnitedStatesof America Abstract Biphasicneuralresponseproperties,wheretheoptimalstimulusfordrivinganeuralresponsechangesfromonestimulus patterntotheoppositestimuluspatternovershortperiodsoftime,havebeendescribedinseveralvisualareas,including lateralgeniculatenucleus(LGN),primaryvisualcortex(V1),andmiddletemporalarea(MT).Wedescribeahierarchicalmodel ofpredictivecodingandsimulationsthatcapturethesetemporalvariationsinneuronalresponseproperties.Wefocuson the LGN-V1 circuit and find that after training on natural images the model exhibits the brain’s LGN-V1 connectivity structure,inwhichthestructureofV1receptivefieldsislinkedtothespatialalignmentandpropertiesofcenter-surround cellsintheLGN.Inaddition,thespatio-temporalresponseprofileofLGNmodelneuronsisbiphasicinstructure,resembling the biphasic response structure of neurons in cat LGN. Moreover, the model displays a specific pattern of influence of feedback,whereLGNreceptivefieldsthatarealignedoverasimplecellreceptivefieldzoneofthesamepolaritydecrease theirresponseswhileneuronsofoppositepolarityincreasetheirresponseswithfeedback.Thisphase-reversedpatternof influencewasrecentlyobservedinneurophysiology.Theseresultscorroboratetheideathatpredictivefeedbackisageneral codingstrategyinthebrain.
