Methods:AlongitudinalcohortstudyconductedinanadolescenttotalpopulationinCentralNorway(TheNord-Tr?ndelag HealthStudies(HUNT)).InYoung-HUNT1,allinhabitantsaged13to19years(N=8944,89%responserate)wereinvitedto participate,andtheyoungestgroup(13to15yearolds)wassurveyedagain4yearslater(Young-HUNT2,N=2429,82% response rate). The participants completed a comprehensive questionnaire on health and life style which included a questionregardingvisitstoaCAMpractitionerinthelast12months. Results:Oneineleven(8.7%,95%CI7.6-9.8%)hadvisitedaCAMpractitioner,anincreaseof26%in4years(1.8%points). ThefinalmultivariableanalysispredictedincreasedoddsofanadolescentbecomingaCAMvisitorfouryearslater(p,0.05) ifsheorhehadpreviouslyvisitedaCAMpractitioner(adjOR3.4),hadmusculoskeletalpain(adjOR1.5),hadmigraine(adjOR 2.3),usedasthmamedicines(adjOR1.8)orsufferedfromanotherdiseaselastingmorethanthreemonths(adjOR2.1).Being malepredictedreducedoddsofvisitingaCAMpractitionerinthefuture(adjOR0.6). Conclusion:WecanconcludefromthisstudythatfuturevisitstoaCAMpractitionerarepredictedbybothpredisposing factors(beingfemale,havingvisitedaCAMpractitionerpreviously)andmedicalneedfactors(havinghadmusculoskeletal pain, migraine, used asthma medicines or experienced another disease lasting more than three months).
