Methods:Atotal310patientswithtype2DMandnormoalbuminuria,whowerereferredtotheDepartmentof OphthalmologyforscreeningofDRwereincludedinthisstudy.DRwasclinicallygradedaccordingtothe InternationalClinicalDiabeticRetinopathyguidelines.Theurinaryalbuminexcretionrate(UAER)wasassessedvia 24-hoururinecollectionandmeasuredbyimmunoturbidimetricassay.Normoalbuminuriawasdefinedasa UAER20μg/minin2outof3consecutiveteststakenwithin2– 3months. Results:DRofanygradewaspresentin64/310(20.7%)patients.Mildnon-proliferativediabeticretinopathy(NPDR) wasmostprevalentinpatientswithDRofanygrade(36/64,56%).Thedurationofdiabetes(OR1.01,95%CI, 1.01–1.02,p0.001),hemoglobinlevels(OR0.73,95%CI,0.59–0.91,p=0.004)andahighertertileofUAER (OR4.04,95%CI,1.71–9.57,p=0.001)hadindependentlysignificantassociationwithDR.NPDRaswellasPDR wasmoreprevalentinpatientswithhighertertileofUAERcomparedwiththosewithlowertertileofUAER(NPDR, p=0.002andPDR,p=0.027,respectively). Conclusions:Ourfindingssuggestthatpatientswithnormoalbuminurictype2DMalsorequireclosemonitoring fortheearlydetectionofDR,especiallyiftheyhaveahigherUAER,longerdurationofdiabetes,orlower hemoglobinlevels.
