Abstract Background:Prepregnancyobesityisassociatedwithincreasedriskforadversepregnancyoutcomesuchas gestationaldiabetesmellitus(GDM),gestationalhypertension,preeclampsia,fetalmacrosomiaandtheneedfor cesareandelivery.TheobjectivesofthisstudyassessedwhetherThaiwomenclassifiedasobeseaccordingto WHO’srecommendedbodymassindex(BMI)forAsianswereatriskfordevelopinggestationaldiabetesmellitus (GDM)andothercomplicationssuchaspreeclampsia,gestationalhypertensionandfetalmacrosomia. Methods:Twohundredandfortywomenparticipatedinthisstudyandfollowedprospectivelyuntildelivery.Half ofthewomen(n=120)wereobese(BMI≥27.5kg/m2)andtheotherhalf(n=120)hadnormalweight(BMI 18.5-23kg/m2).Maternaldemographicdata,obstetricandneonataloutcomesfrombothgroupswerecomparedto eachother.Relativeriskand95%confidenceinterval(CI)werecalculated. Results:Comparedtonormalweightwomen,obeseThaiwomenwerenotatincreasedriskforgestational diabetesmellitus(RR=0.9[95%CI0.6-1.4]).Relativeriskofpreeclampsiaandfetalmacrosomiainobesewomen were0.7[95%CI0.2-3.3]and1.4[95%CI0.5-4.3],respectively.Relativeriskofgestationalhypertensioninobese womenwas12[95%CI1.6-90.8]. Conclusion:WhenWHO’sclassificationofobesitywasusedforAsianpopulations,prepregnancyobesitywithout metabolicproblemsdidnotincreasetheriskforGDM,preeclampsiaandfetalmacrosomiainThaiwomen.But, prepregnancyobesitycontinuedtoincreasetheriskfordevelopinggestationalhypertension.
