Thisstudyaimedtoestimatetheprevalenceofchildbirth-relatedpost-traumaticstresssymptomsanditsobstetric andperinatalriskfactorsamongasampleofIranianwomen. Methods:Thiswasacross-sectionalstudycarriedoutinBushehr,Iranduringa3-monthsperiodfromJulyto September2009.Datawerecollectedfromallwomenattendingelevenhealthcarecentersforpostnatalcare6to 8weeksafterchildbirth.Thosewhohadatraumaticdeliverywereidentifiedandenteredintothestudy.Inorderto assesschildbirth-relatedpost-traumaticstress,thePost-traumaticSymptomScale-Interview(PSS-I)wasadministered. Dataondemographic,obstetricandperinatalcharacteristicsalsowerecollected.Multivariatelogisticregressionwas performedtoexaminetheassociationbetweenchildbirth-relatedpost-traumaticstressanddemographicand obstetricandperinatalvariables. Results:Inall,400womenwereinitiallyevaluated.Ofthese,218women(54.5%)hadatraumaticdeliveryand overall,80women(20%)werefoundtobesufferingfrompost-partumpost-traumaticstressdisorder(PTSD). Multiplelogisticregressionanalysisrevealedthatpost-partumPTSDwasassociatedwitheducationallevel, gestationalageatdelivery,numberofprenatalcarevisits,pregnancycomplications,pregnancyintervals,labor duration,andmodeofdelivery. Conclusions:Thefindingsindicatedthattheprevalenceoftraumaticbirthexperiencesandpost-partumPTSD wererelativelyhighamongIranianwomen.Thefindingsalsoindicatedthatobstetricandperinatalvariableswere independentlythemostsignificantcontributingfactorstowomen’spost-partumPTSD.Itseemsthatabetter perinatalcareandsupportivechildbirthmighthelptoreducetheburdenofpost-partumPTSDamongthis population.
