Results:Fromaliteraturereviewofhemosporidianprevalenceinseabirds,wecollatedadatasetof60species,in whichatleast15individualshadbeenexamined.Thesedatawereincludedinphylogeneticallycontrolled statisticalanalysesofhemosporidianprevalenceinrelationtoecologicalandlife-historyparameters.Haemoproteus parasiteswerecommoninfrigatebirdsandgulls,whileHepatozoonoccurredinalbatrossesandstormpetrels,and Plasmodiummainlyinpenguins.TheprevalenceofHaemoproteusshowedageographicalsignal,beinglowerin specieswithdistributiontowardspolarenvironments.InterspecificdifferencesinPlasmodiumprevalencewere explainedbyvariablesthatrelatetotheexposuretoparasites,suggestingthatprevalenceishigherinburrow nesterswithlongfledglingperiods.MeasuresofPlasmodium,butnotHaemoproteusprevalenceswereinfluenced bythemethod,withPCR-baseddataresultinginhigherprevalenceestimates. Conclusions:Ouranalysessuggestthat,asinotheraviantaxa,phylogenetic,ecologicalandlife-historyparameters determinetheprevalenceofhemosporidianparasitesinseabirds.Wediscusshowtheserelationshipsshouldbe furtherexploredinfuturestudies.
