Methods:TheAmsterdamBornChildrenandtheirDevelopment(ABCD)Study(N=5,238)andtheGermanHealth InterviewandExaminationSurveyforChildrenandAdolescents(KiGGS)(N=16,301)arebothlargestudies.Women provideinformationonalcoholintakeinearlypregnancy,3monthspostpartumandupto17yearsretrospectively. Multivariatelogisticregressionanalysesandstratifiedregressionanalyseswereperformedtoexaminethe associationbetweenprenatalalcoholexposureandPTBandSGA,respectively. Results:Noassociationwasfoundbetweenanylevelofprenatalalcoholexposure(non-daily,daily,non-abstaining) andSGA.Theoffspringofdailydrinkersandnon-abstainershadalowerriskofPTB[ABCD:oddsratio(OR)0.31,95% confidenceinterval(CI)0.13,0.77;KiGGS:OR0.75,95%CI0.57,0.99].Interactionswithmaternaleducation,maternal distressormaternalsmokingwerenotsignificant. Conclusions:Althoughtheseresultsshouldbeinterpretedwithcaution,bothstudiesshowednoadverseeffectsof low-moderateprenatalalcoholexposureonPTBandSGA,notevenintheoffspringofwomenwhowere disadvantagedintermsofloweducation,highlevelsofdistress,orsmokingduringpregnancy.
