Null mutants of the mitochondrial phosphatase DrosophilaPGAM5(dPGAM5)exhibitedincreasedvulnerabilitytoHS,whichwasreversedbyMB-specificexpressionofthe caspaseinhibitorp35,andsimilarvulnerabilitywasinducedinwild-typefliesbyknockdownofMBdPGAM5.Eliminationof theMBdidnotaffecttheHSresponseofwild-typeflies,butdidincreasetheresistanceofdPGAM5-deficientfliestoHS. Thus, the MB may possess an apoptosis-dependent toxic function, the suppression of which by dPGAM5 appears to be crucialforHSresistance.
