Methods:AprospectiveobservationalstudywasconductedfromOctober2008toJune2009.Itincluded682 childrenupto5yearsofagewithacutegastroenteritis(AGE)whoattendedprimarycare(n=18)andemergency room/hospitalsettings(n=10),coveringtheregionsofGaliciaandAsturias(North-westSpain).Allnon-medical expensesincurredthroughouttheepisodewererecordedindetailusingpersonalinterviewsandtelephone contact. Results:Amongthe682enrolledchildren,207(30.4%)wererotaviruspositiveand170(25%)hadreceivedatleast onedoseofrotavirusvaccine.Themean(standarddeviation)indirectcostcausedbyanepisodeofAGEwas estimatedat135.17(182.70)Euros.Costswere1.74-foldhigherwhenAGEwascausedbyrotaviruscomparedwith otheretiologies:192.7(219.8)Eurosvs.111.6(163.5)Euros(p.001).Thecostsforabsenteeismwerethemost substantialwithameanof91.41(134.76)Eurosperfamily,resultinginalossof2.45(3.17)daysofwork.InRVAGE patients,theabsenteeismcostwas120.4(154)Euroscomparedwith75.8(123)fortheotheretiologies(p=.002), becauseoflossof3.5(3.6)vs1.9(2.9)daysofwork(p.001).Mealscostswere2-fold-higher(48.5(55)vs24.3(46) Euros,p.001)andtravelcostswere2.6-fold-higher(32(92)vs12.5(21.1)Euros,p=.005)inRVAGEpatients comparedwiththosewithotheretiologies.TherewerenodifferencesbetweenRVAGEandotheretiologiesgroups regardingcostsofhiringofcaregiversorpurchaseofmaterial.PatientswithRVAGEwereadmittedtohospital morefrequentlythanthosewithotheretiologies(47.8%vs14%,p.001).
