WereportontheacceptabilityofHIVcounsellingandtesting,anduptakeofresults,beforeandaftertheintroductionof rapidtestinginthisarea. MethodsandPrincipalFindings:HIVcounsellorsofferedcounsellingandtestingtowomenattending8antenatalclinics, priortoenrolmentintoastudyexamininginfantfeedingandpostnatalHIVtransmission.FromAugust2001toApril2003, bloodwassentforHIVELISAtestinginlinewiththePreventionofMother-to-ChildTransmission(PMTCT)programmeinthe district.FromMay2003toSeptember2004womenwereofferedarapidHIVtestaspartofthePMTCTprogramme,butalso continuedtohaveELISAtestingforstudypurposes.Of12,323womencounselled,5,879attendedclinicpriortoMay2003, and6,444afterMay2003whenrapidtestingwasintroduced;ofwhom4,324(74.6%)and4,810(74.6%)agreedtohavean HIVtestrespectively.Ofthe4,810womenwhohadarapidHIVtest,only166(3.4%)requestedtoreceivetheirresultsonthe same day as testing, the remainder opted to return for results at a later appointment. Women with secondary school educationwerelesslikelytoagreetotestingthanthosewithnoeducation(AOR0.648,p,0.001),aswerewomenaged21– 35(AOR0.762,p,0.001)and.35years(AOR0.756,p,0.01)comparedtothose,20years.
