Results:FifteenIBSsamples(17%)testedpositiveforStaphylococcusaureuswithathermonuclease(nuc )gene- targetingqPCRassay,whereasnoneofthehealthycontrolswerepositiveforS.aureus(p0.05).TheS.aureus -positiveIBSsampleswereconfirmedbysequencingofthePCRamplicons.Clostridiumperfringenswasdetected fromIBSandcontrolgroupswithasimilarfrequency(13%and17%,respectively)witha-toxin(plc)gene-targeting qPCRassaywhilenoneofthesamplestestedpositivefortheCl.perfringensenterotoxin-encodinggene(cpe). Conclusions:TheqPCRpanelconsistingof12assaysforanextensivesetofpathogenicmicroorganismsprovidesan efficientalternativetotheconventionaldetectionofgastrointestinalpathogensandcouldacceleratetheinitiationof targetedantibiotictherapyreducingtheriskofpost-infectiousIBS(PI-IBS).S.aureushasnotbeenpreviouslyreported tobeassociatedwiththeonsetofIBS.AlthoughwediscoveredsignificantdifferencesintheprevalenceofS.aureus betweenthestudygroups,itsimportanceingivingrisetoIBSsymptomsrequiresfurtherstudies.
