Lymphocyte immunophenotyping was performedon1293HIVseronegativestudyparticipants.Hematologyandclinicalchemistrywereperformedonupto1541 cohortenrollees.Theratioofmalestofemaleswas1.9:1.Means,mediansand95%referencerangeswerecalculatedand compared with those from other nations. The median CD4+ T cell count for the group was 810cells/ml. There were significantgenderdifferencesforbothredandwhitebloodcellparameters.Kenyansubjectshadlowermedianhemoglobin concentrations (9.5g/dL; range 6.7–11.1) and neutrophil counts (1850cells/ml; range 914–4715) compared to North Americans.KenyanclinicalchemistryreferencerangeswerecomparabletothosefromtheUSA,withtheexceptionofthe upperlimitsforbilirubinandbloodureanitrogen,whichwere2.3-foldhigherand1.5-foldlower,respectively.Thisstudyis thefirsttoassessclinicalreferencerangesforahighlandcommunityinKenyaandhighlightstheneedtodefineclinical laboratoryrangesfromthenationalcommunitynotonlyforclinicalresearchbutalsocareandtreatment.
