Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Weevaluatedgeneexpressionoflectin-likeoxidized-low-density-lipoproteinreceptor-1 (LOX-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) in HIV-1 transgenic (HIV-1Tg)rats;thesegenesareallthoughttoplayimportantrolesinearlyatherogenesis.Furthermore,theplasmalevelof sICAM-1wasmeasured.WefoundthatgeneexpressionsofLOX-1andVCAM-1werehigherintheaorticarchofHIV-1Tgrats comparedtocontrols.Also,thelevelofsICAM-1waselevatedintheHIV-1Tgratscomparedtocontrols,buttheICAM-1 geneexpressionprofiledidnotshowanydifferencesbetweenthegroups. Conclusions/Significance:HIV-1Tgratshavegeneexpressionpatternsindicatingendothelialdysfunctionandaccelerated atherosclerosisinaorta,suggestingthatHIV-infectionpersemaycauseatherosclerosis.Thistransgenicratmodelmaybea verypromisingmodelforfurtherstudiesofthepathophysiologybehindHIV-associatedcardiovasculardisease.
